Category: Zone BBS Q&A
I'm sure this will undergo some changes, and I'm tired, so it may not be perfect in terms of tramatical correctness. However, we've had a lot of questions about setting up Team Talk, so I have decided to post this now. I hope it helps you all out. Reply if you have any questions or if something is unclear.

Welcome to the Team Talk help file for the ZoneBBS. This file will be updated as needed. Please read on, as this document contains important info which may save you a lot of time and frustration when using this program. If you have any questions that this document does not answer, feel free to contact a community leader.
Installation
It is important that you run the latest version of Team Talk to connect to the ZoneBBS server. A link is provided on the main voice chat page.
When installing Team Talk, it is important that you install the correct version. For people using screen readers, the proper version is the classic client. Select this from the combo box and then press enter. Then, simply follow the step by step instructions until you have completed the installation wizard.
The set up wizard
When you run team talk for the first time, either by selecting to launch it upon completion of the installation, or by running it, the software will bring up a set up wizard. The first option in the wizard is asks what language you would like to use. English is the default, and if you would like to select another language, check the use another language checkbox and choose your language. However, this documentation is for the English set up only.
The first option that it asks you to fill out is your nickname to use on the server. Type in your desired user name, preferably your ZoneBBS user name, and then press tab. The next option allows you to have your status set to "away" after you are idle for however many seconds you choose. Leaving 180, which is the default is fine, but feel free to insert another number if you so desire.
The next series of options have to do with the way in which you transmit audio to the server. There are 2 choices-- push to talk and voice activated. Push to talk allows you to control when you send your voice to the server by pushing a key or key combination. Voice activated mode sets it up so that whenever you speak, assuming your audio is working, you will transmit to the server.
Speech transmission mode push to talk
This is the first choice you will have within this series of options. If you wish to use push to talk mode, check the checkbox, and then press tab. You will then find a set up key button. Press enter on this, and then hold down the key or key combination you wish to use for this for 5 seconds. Upon releasing the key, it should be set, and you will be returned to the previous menu. Note that you can not use what are called modifier keys on their own as push to talk keys. These include shift and control. However, you may use 2 modifier keys together such as shift and control. Using the scroll lock key, or the num pad 0, however, may be simpler. After you have set the key, pressed tab again and it should verify your chosen push to talk key or key combination. If it doesn't, press shift tab and try another key or set of keys using the same process.
Voice activation transmission mode
Pressing tab after the key combination field will bring you to the voice activated checkbox. Check this if you wish to use this mode. After setting these options to your liking, press alt plus N to move on to the next section.
Sound system settings
For most users who are advanced enough to know how to use these controls to use different sound cards, this is straight forward. If not, you should be ok to leave these options as they are. If this turns out not to be the case, this section will be expanded in the future. You can go back and set any of these options to other settings by pressing f4 from within team talk. Press alt N to go to the final portion of the set up wizard.
Simply clicking the finish button here will launch Team Talk.
Setting up Team Talk to work with the ZoneBBS server
Once Team Talk is launched, press f2 to connect to a server. Under the server name, type in zonebbs.com. Pressing tab will then take you to a password field which you should leave blank. This is an option for servers that feel the need to set passwords, and the ZoneBBS server does not require this. The next 2 fields are for port information and should be both set as 10333. This should be the default and should not have to be changed. Pressing tab past these 2 options will land you on the user authentication edit box. Although Team Talk says this information is optional, it's not. This is where you enter your zoneBBS user ID. Note that this field is case sensitive, so if there are both upper and lower case letters in your user name, you must type them correctly. Pressing tab again lands you on the authentication password. Type in your Team Talk password here, even though Team Talk says it is optional.
The next 2 fields are join channel and join channel password. If you would like to join a specific channel when connecting, type the correct spelling of the channel in the channel field. Most channels will not have passwords, so you can leave this password field blank. Then, Tab to the ok button, and you should be connected! Congratulations! To connect in the future, after launching Team talk, simply press f2 and all of your information should be stored. All you will need to do is press enter.
Helpful hints and keystrokes
When you connect, you will land in a tree view. Press your up and down arrow keys to move between the channels. Your screen reader should say the name of the channel and then the number of people in that channel. If you would like to join a specific channel, when focus is set to that channel, press control J. To leave a channel, press control L. To leave the server, press f2. This is the same as the connect hotkey.
Getting rid of the percent announcement when in the Team Talk window with Jaws.
Whenever your microphone picks something up, your screen reader will announce the amount of percentage of audio coming through your microphone. This, to say the least, can be an annoyance. Here's how you get rid of them.
When you are in the Team Talk window, press insert f2 to bring up the jaws manager. Then, arrow down to the configuration manager and press enter. Jaws will say "team talk 4.0.jcf configuration manager". At this point, press alt, then right arrow to set options and then and then up arrow once to user options. Then, press enter. The first choice is the one you want, which is announce progress updates. Press the up arrow until you come to off, followed by enter. Then, press control s to save the changes, and alt f4 to exit the manager. Note that this change will only affect Team Talk and not any other applications as long as you are in the Team Talk window when you initiate the configuration manager.
This is a rather helpful file, though the advanced Computer users can make use of the Team talk help files by hitting F1. It's not very well written though.
Feel free to modify it and make a new post. I'm sure everyone would appreciate your attention.
I found one spelling error thus far and a phrase or two that might be able to use better wording. I'll repost it below.
I'm sure this will undergo some changes, and I'm tired, so it may not be perfect in terms of gramatical correctness. However, we've had a lot of questions about setting up Team Talk, so I have decided to post this now. I hope it helps you all out. Reply if you have any questions or if something is unclear.

However, this documentation only guides you through the English version of the Installation process.
The first option that it asks you for is your “nickname” to use on the server. Type in your desired user name, preferably your ZoneBBS user name, and then press tab. The next option enables your status to be set to display "away" after you are idle for however many seconds you choose. You may leave it to “180,” which is the default setting, however, feel free to insert another number if you so desire.
The next series of options controls the way in which you transmit audio to the server. There are 2 choices-- push to talk and voice activated. Push to talk allows you to control when you send your voice to the server by pushing a key or key combination. Assuming your audio is working and nothing other malfunctions, Voice activated mode programs the software to transmit your voice or a voice of another individual to the site’s server, whenever it recognizes the sound of an individual’s voice.
Speech transmission mode push to talk
This is the first option you will have within this series of options. If you wish to use push to talk mode, check the checkbox, and then press tab. You will then find a set up key button. Voice activation transmission mode
Pressing tab after the key combination field will bring you to the voice activated checkbox. Check this if you wish to use this mode. After setting these options to your most comfortable preferences, press alt plus N to move on to the next section.
Sound system settings
For most users who are advanced enough to know how to use these controls to use different sound cards, this is straight forward. If not, you should be ok to leave these options unchanged. If this turns out not to be the case, this section will be expanded in the future. You are able to revisit and set any of these options to other settings by pressing f4 from within team talk. I've set up team talk, but can't talk on it for very long because my internet connection is just rubbish. *sad*
I set up my zoneBBS profile, and finally got it right after adding multiple entries to my server list. How can I delete the ones I don't wish to use? Delete key doesn't work.
rachel, and the point of this was exactly what?
I agree with Ryden. Wy the heck did you repost that whole thing for maybe one or two lousy grammatical errors? Scott's writing is superior to your own as it is.
Agree with the last two posters. Who cares if there are a few gramatical/spelling errors as long as people can understand and follow it.
to post 4 and 5...
this is from a community reader writing the instruction when he's perhaps extremely tired. i don't see any reason why he needs to write everything in perfect sense, as long as people can understand what he's talking about. he's not a tech writer, he's not a professional writer, you can't expect him to have 110% perfectly right at any given time.
you might be a perfectionist, but not anyone in this world gotta be a perfectionist like you do.
I know this may be a bit off topic for this thread, but i'll ask anyway (I also mentioned this in publics yesterday): Now that the voice chat server is up, does this mean that zbp will be discontinued in the not too distant future? Chris, JJ, can you confirm whether there are any plans to remove zbp anytime soon?
Thanks.
We have not made any definite plans relating to ZBP.
At first glance it seemed that way, and my judgement at first glance would not always be correct. I found quite a few mistakes, when I sat down and went through the documentation. Scott was okay with, so now's what's the fuss?
Now the problem lies in the premise. I ask you to check it. What kind of document is this? It's a guide and is a professional document, therefore should not be written in the style of a random note to a mate or a story. Just as the rules to sites has to be as good as it possibly can so it's easy to read, doesn't give people a headache, and/or so that people can take it seriously. Before one writes words they must consider their audience. You've heard that plenty in your English classes. As the essence of writing depends on your audience and if the incorrect medium is utilized it appears sloppy. This document is posted for everyone to view and is the guide on how to set up "TeamTalk" So naturally, it must have a level of perfection, as it's an essential document. It would be different if Scott, was to tell say Joe about how to set it up, so that would be more personal instructions and there for doesn't necessarily have to be strictly professional, it would be nice, but in that case it wouldn't have to.
Thanks Chris for that information, much appreciated. Personally I hope zbp stays, but obviously i'm not the one making decisions so'''
to post 14: sweetheart girl, you should ask yourself what is the fuss. you are the one who commented, you are the one who make judgement when there's no major issue. and let me tell you, if you want to be as perfection as you are, it is a safe option not to judge other "At first glance". it is dangerous, and you get no much credit for that. if your purpose for posting just to get your number of post up, feel free to spend your time on game parler and some other post where you can get your full joy there. in another word, leave us, those unperfection people alone, and back to your perfection world.
to post 13 and 15: it is great to hear that zbp is staying for the time beeing. i don't use zbp at all, but, it is another alternative for some user that prefer phone confrence. is good to see voice chat server is back again. it looks better than the old vt, and from what i heard, the overall quality is better too. good work cris. *smile*
We had both online before with Ventrilo and ZBP. Looks like there's still interest in both. Doesn't mean this'll change in future, of course.
Oh, also added some Window-Eyes help text for the progress bar annoyance.
I am not trying to gain my post count unlike some of you out there. I don't have anytime to waist. I thought I'd come on here for a bit. I logged in, saw that link to the boards for the guide and decided to come look at it in case I wanted to use the team talk server in the future. When I got here I saw the sloppy mess of a post... I couldn't help but edit it.
No, it's not me. I posted a correct version to help you all, and then when I check back, you are hounding me for it. You started the drama. I only posted something to help this site. I did just what brant did. He too said it was not well written, why don't you hound him too!!!!
Listen, I know why you like to hound me, and you know as well as I do. Just because I am good, happy, try for perfection, and productive does not mean you can hate me. Check your premises. Is there anything wrong with your big brother you so dearly love Emanuel Kant? I think so...
Also what's up with evading my question, are you too cowardly to answer? Do yyou know you are wrong?
wow... wow... considering someone that try to be different from all of us here, using those words... just, unbelievable. at a glance, i thought i need to clean my ear, after all the nice words our little sweetheart used in her post.
and for your information, there're people giving fitback to Scott, perhaps not publicly, but privately. in fact, i was the very first people that read this board, and gave him my fitback on what i think of it all.
sometime, not every bit of things going on need to be in public, for the sake of your fun you know.
and let me tell ya something, watch your language sweetheart girl, this is not the language that the world will expect from a perfect goddest like you. do think before you write. you as someone consider yourself mature than most of us here, show the most immaturity in it all just by the above post.
last sentence for ya sweetheart girl, from your post above, it shows that you are way beyond perfection, and i'm disappointed at you. truely *sigh*
Sloppy mess of a post? Rachel, I hate to break it to you, but that is how most of your posts look, and there are certainly plenty to prove me out. The
work that any of us do as CL's, we do voluntarily. Scott did not have to create that help file, he did it because he knew people would have questions
about how to use TeamTalk, and he has the technological know-how to anser them. If you can write so much better than him, why did you not write that whole help file yourself? Any time any of us as staff goes out of our way for someone on the site, we do so voluntarily. So, I suggest you stop being a hypocrite,
and stop hounding someone else who has done far more to help this site than you ever have, or ever will.
There is a difference between being a perfectionist and being an arrogant, obnoxious, insufferable know-it-all. Thinking that you're always right and other people are wrong, Rachel sweety, is why people hound you. It has nothing to do with being intimidated by your supposed intellect, as you seem to have convinced yourself.
I took the time to read a few of your most recent posts and found a number of grammatical errors in there. Being a writer myself I tend to look for those things without noticing... but did I bother to draw your attention to them? Of course not. Sitting around and re-writing an entire board post, correcting what seem to you to be errors, is not what I would call productive. For someone who has "no time to waist", you spared no expense here in your attempt to put yourself above Scott.
Professional document? What planet are you on? How many professional documents start with "I'm sure this will undergo some changes, and I'm tired"? Don't talk down to us like you're our English teacher. Start putting things into the right context.
What you seem to have missed entirely is that no person so far has said that they had trouble understanding the original post - not even Brant, so don't try to draw him into your argument. So, seeing as you have no time to waist, why don't you get down off your high horse and do something "useful".
Oh, and just as a sidenote, sweetheart, anytime is not one word in the context you used it in. Also, most people don't spell the word you with two Y's.
To the original point of the topic, though, I don't think I would ever bother setting up TeamTalk myself but I could understand the instructions just fine. Bravo, Scott.
TeamTalk really is good stuff, Steve. I wasn't sure of it myself when I got told about it being our new voice-chat client, but it is fun, and easy to use. But maybe voice-chat just isn't your thing?
While I appreciate your submiting your correction Rachel, I don't think it's fair to call it a sloppy mess of a post. While you did make a few minor changes, I think you are making a bigger deal of it than it has to be. Granted, people are after you about it, but when you post the following as your status, it shows that you truly do think you are above us all. As was already stated, I'm not acting in a professional capacity, so while I'm open to suggestions, don't pride myself on perfection. The technical details are what is most important, and I believe I have those correct. Here are the status messages I'm referring to.
Friendly Philosophical Rachel the essence of writing depends on your audience and if the incorrect medium is utilized it appears sloppy.
Friendly Philosophical Rachel if the Community leaders has no respect for grammar or this site, why should we?
Shea: I think Kev may have found a work around for it, but I need to get the details from him. The only way I could figure out how to remove the progress messages with Window Eyes was to remove the script altogether. Being that Window Eyes is not my primary screen reader, I don't know quite as much about it.
Scott, I added the Window-Eyes instructions to the help file. Thought I mentioned this before, but it's a pretty simple fix.
yeh, she's always had this problem, but i learned that if you point it out, support it enough, make many valid arguments and don't let her bull shit, she'll just put you on ignore because she can start a hole lot of shit but doesn't have the guts to finish it off.
Scott and J, should we move that help file from this board to somewhere on the TeamTalk page? Or has that already been done and I've missed it?
I find that second status message of Rachel's quite amusing. You used community leaders plural, Rachel, therefore you've used incorrect grammar with the word, has. I believe it should properly read, "if the Community leaders have no respect for grammar or this site, why should we?" Just thought I'd fix your sloppy mess of a status message. *Grin*
OK, I'm done being petty on this topic now, I just had to amuse myself one last time.
It already is.
i'm lost Scott what do i have to do with any of this/ hehehe
One thing about the instructions, I was able to use the right control key only for my push to talk key.
And they are a very good set of instructions by the way. I hope we've finished fighting; it was not necessary!
Shea: you didn't, sorry. I was listening to jaws instead of reading and misheard Jage as shea. I promise, if it had been voices I was telling the difference from, I might have had a slightly bettter shot. LOL
Lmao, Scott. I hope J and Shea sound different, or Dan's in trouble.
rachel, why did you even post about the grammar problems in this help file? it's not like we're in english class, it's just a help file, and it's not like it needs corrections as long as people can understand it, that's all that matters.
I added a link to the new Window-Eyes TeamTalk scripts in the help file. I think there's Jaws scripts out there as well? Anyone have a current link to them? I'm not sure if they still work with version 4.
Right and for the mac users your petty much out of luck unless you can duel boot, as far as I know you can run teem talk. Peace out
Scott,
Very nice job!
Now I think I can sign up after reading your instructions!
Smile!
Thanks a lotfor posting them.
Hi,
I do have a question to ask.
Does a person have to set up their microphone before he or she gets connected to team talk? This is very new to me, so excuse my ignorance.
Thank you,
Yes, you need to have a microphone connected to your computer and set up before you use Team Talk.
Thank you!
one would think, if a hacker truely wanting to hurt people they will perhaps choose facebook, myspace, livejournal, twitter, even Zone instead of blinknation.
zoners don't necessary hate blinknation people, for got sake, we all
share the same common ground, but, yet, for god sake, be a grown up!
if someone said the world is a flat square will you believe it? i won't, unless messive research tell me so.
you people uses too many fake resources and causing problem all over. look what happen before with some of the blinknation members on zone, and now, if you said you aren't accusing zone who do that, why bother to post at the very first place. your post, don't reflect what you said, my boy. if you not accusing, or thinking members of zone hack that to blinknation, don't waste the webspace. do something eventful in your life. such as go out to the real wourld, and get a life.
also, agree with both post 17/19.
Scott, though I don't do voice chat myself save conferencing at work using Skype, all I can say is the "People at Skype" could really use your help. Your instructions were quite thorough, and although they were of course done up for us using readers, you could no doubt do it for the community at large. Oh, and unlike Skype, you didn't write just one paragraph of tidbit followed by a recommendation to go off surfing in the forums.
Yup the "people at Skype" could use documenters like you.
i'm sure its accessable for screen reader, jaws in particular. have a friend who use it to host it's business site, and he's totally blind too.
good luck
sorry guys, above post refers to some other topic. for some reason, zone likes to post my reply here when i sign in and post. grr!!!
man, sorry I went here..ppl saying things like they are going for prolific poster awards? If you don''t have anything worth saying just keep your mouth closed and your cursor out of comment fields. That way ppl might think you are ignorant, but when you continually write about nothing you remove all doubt.
Those aren't actual posts. People have a board rank by their name. You'll notice you have one too.
